Where Should You Stay in Jamaica?
Which part of Jamaica is right for your trip?

Negril, Ocho Rios, or Montego Bay: Where Should You Stay in Jamaica?
You know you want to go to Jamaica. Now comes the question that can shape the whole trip: where should you stay?
Negril, Ocho Rios, and Montego Bay all offer beautiful scenery, welcoming hospitality, and resorts for different budgets and travel styles. But they don’t feel like the same vacation. One is known for long beach days and sunsets. Another puts waterfalls and outdoor adventures close to your resort. The third makes it easy to combine beach time with a variety of outings.
Here’s how I help travelers decide which area fits them best.
Negril: Beach days, sunsets, and room to slow down
If your ideal Jamaica morning starts with a walk on the sand and no rush to be anywhere, Negril deserves a close look. Seven Mile Beach is the area’s signature: a long stretch of sand with places to swim, relax, eat, and enjoy music along the shore. Negril also has a very different coastline at the West End, where rocky cliffs overlook the sea.
You can spend most of your trip enjoying the beach and still make time for a few memorable outings. Take a catamaran cruise, go snorkeling, book a dive outing suited to your experience, or visit Rick’s Café for its sunset views and cliff divers. A meal away from the resort gives you another chance to enjoy Jamaican food and the area’s easygoing pace.
Who will enjoy Negril? Couples looking for beach time together, families who want to keep their days flexible, and groups that would rather gather by the water than follow a packed excursion schedule. It can also suit a celebration trip, especially if everyone agrees that the beach is the main event.
What to consider: A cliffside hotel and a hotel directly on Seven Mile Beach offer two distinct experiences. If stepping onto sand from your resort is important, we need to check the property’s exact location. Negril also means a drive from the airport in Montego Bay, so it’s worth allowing for that on your arrival and departure days.
Ocho Rios: Waterfalls and outdoor adventures
Ocho Rios is the area I’d start with if you want to come home with stories about what you did, as well as where you relaxed. Dunn’s River Falls is its best-known attraction. Visitors can climb the terraced falls with a guide, enjoy the park, and spend time near the beach. Island Gully Falls, often called the Blue Hole, offers natural pools and a different waterfall outing in the hills above town.
Depending on your interests, an Ocho Rios trip might also include snorkeling, a river outing, a rainforest activity, or a visit to Green Grotto Caves along the broader north coast. You can make it an active trip without scheduling every day: one day exploring, one day enjoying the resort, then another outing when you’re ready.
Who will enjoy Ocho Rios? Active couples, families with kids who enjoy being outdoors, and groups that want shared excursions. It can work particularly well for travelers who like to leave the resort and see more of Jamaica’s landscape.
What to consider: Ocho Rios has beaches, but beach size and setting vary by property. If your dream is a broad, walkable stretch of sand, we should look at the individual resort rather than assume every beach here will feel alike. Some waterfall activities involve slippery or uneven surfaces, so I’d match the excursion to the ages and mobility needs in your party.
Montego Bay: An easy arrival and plenty of variety
Montego Bay is home to Sangster International Airport, making it a convenient starting point for many Jamaica trips. It’s a good choice if different people in your party want different things: time by the pool, a beach outing, some local history, and perhaps an adventure or two.
You could visit Doctor’s Cave Beach, take a snorkeling or boat excursion, or head toward Falmouth for a gentle bamboo raft ride on the Martha Brae River. The wider area offers other outings, too, from guided adventure activities to Rose Hall’s historic estate. You can keep the itinerary light or fill several days without choosing a trip centered entirely on the beach or waterfalls.
Who will enjoy Montego Bay? Couples, families, and groups looking for flexibility. It’s especially appealing for a shorter stay, or when an easier arrival and departure matter to your group.
What to consider: Resorts marketed as being in the Montego Bay area can be spread along the coast. Their beaches, atmosphere, and distance from the airport can differ considerably. The resort choice matters as much as the destination name.
A quick way to choose
- Choose Negril if long beach days, sunset views, and a slower pace top your wish list.
- Choose Ocho Rios if you’re excited about waterfalls and outdoor excursions.
- Choose Montego Bay if you want a convenient arrival and a flexible mix of beach time and activities.
These are starting points, not rigid rules. A couple can have an adventurous stay in Negril, and a family can spend a peaceful week in Ocho Rios. The right resort and the right area have to work together.
When I plan a Jamaica trip, I ask what you want an ordinary day to feel like. Do you want to wake up and head straight for the beach? Spend a day climbing waterfalls? Keep the schedule open so everyone can choose their own pace? Those answers tell us more than a list of hotel amenities ever could.
If you’re torn between the three, tell me who’s traveling, what you want to do, and how important the beach is to you. I’ll help you find the part of Jamaica that feels like your vacation.
